Thorens are a Swiss company still operating today. Founded in Ste Croix in 1883, initially making music boxes, they began producing cylinder phonographs in 1903 before moving onto disc gramophones. By the 1920’s they had become a major supplier of gramophone motors and soundboxs to other companies.
This gramophone, a ‘Helvitia’, is one of a wide range available in their 1914 catalogue. This particular ‘Helvitia’ has very small variations on the catalogue model so one can assume it is a slightly newer model. Its case and metal work are in good condition with the usual signs of aging you would expect. The double spring motor has been overhauled with one new main spring added. The ‘Morning Glory’ horn appears to have been repainted at some stage to a nice standard. Parts of the metal chrome finish has disappeared over time.
