Japy Freres Portico Clock circa 1850 – 1858

€690.00

Frédéric Japy 1749 – 1812, revolutionised mass production of clock movements (mechanisms) without any loss of quality, in fact, he probably produced movements to a higher standard than many of the elite custom clockmakers.

By the time this clock was produced, his sons were managing the company, under the name Japy Freres (1821 – 1854). The movement is marked “Japy Freres Medaile d’Or” which dates it to 1850-1858. I would imagine, by the style of the hands, that it was the earlier part of the 1850’s.

The case would have been bought and assembled with the movement by another clockmaker/retailer for sale. This type of clock, a Portico,  was very popular during the mid 1800’s.

The clock strikes the hour and half hour.

Description

Inscriptions :-

“Semome au Mihke 1866”. Repair man from 1866, unable to find a place called Mihke but Migne, Migre and Misse in France are possibilities.

Condition:-

The movement has been fully overhauled and is guaranteed for a year. The case is in excellent condition, with some very minor nicks as you would expect for its age. The porcelain dial (face) has hairline cracks from 6 o clock to the left winding hole and from left winding hole to the right. It also has a repaired dent just visible above the surround. These are a result of the method of putting the clock in “beat” and certainly does not detract from the appearance of this beautiful clock.
