At the heart of this particular clock is a single fusee movement from the 1840 s. It has several markings on the plate by descendants of the Bryson family. The Brysons are a well known Scottish clockmaking family. The most famous member of the Bryson family was Robert of Edinburgh (1778-1852), a very prominent clockmaker. It may have come from his workshop but there are several members of the extended family who were clock makers so it is difficult to say.
The dial/face surround is sapele , with a tulip wood back box, both are hand crafted & finished traditionally with French polish, waxed over. The dial/face is hand made and painted in the traditional style. The hands are also hand crafted “Moon hands”, made of spring steel and blued, they are correct for a clock of this era. I have intentionally used piano hinges for the side and bottom doors as a small nod to the case’s modernity.
This clock is technically a “Timepiece” as it has no hour strike. The movement is the usual high quality, robust movement you would expect for a fusee of this age.
